First album from Versus in ten years out August 3, 2010

Holy wowzer, another 1990s indie rock staple on Merge records has new material. Here's a track from the upcoming On the Ones and Threes.

"Invincible Hero" - [mp3]

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Seinking Ships features first vocals from Lush's Miki Berenyi in like ten years.

Mainly instrumental project Seinking Ships is Eric Matthews (ex-Cardinal and at one time signed to Subpop) and Christopher Seink. They convinced 1990s dreampop queen Miki Berenyi to add some vocals and as a result we have "You Didn't Love Me," from the upcoming S-Curve records release Museum Quality Capture. Her soft, enchanting voice always provides solace. -Kenyon

Thrill Jockey records> new artist

It is time to give some big big LOVE to Thrill Jockey, cause they've been a big part of the indie music circuit for years now. TJ has supported all kinds of post-rock artists such as Tortoise, Mouse on Mars and Oval. Thrill's latest addition is Lazer Crystal from Chicago. Yes another band with "crystal," can you believe this? The first full album MCMLXXX (1980) just hit the world last week and the band just hit Europe for tour.

"Love Rhombus" - [mp3] - features afterhours electro glossed with a sleepy lead vocal and a youth group vocal hook resembling "Cry Little Sister" from Lost Boys. Some of their other stuff sounds like Joy Division underwater. -Kenyon
Stereo Total > new tracks + tour dates

Euro duo Stereo Total have just released their ninth album through Kill Rock Stars. "Baby Ouh!" is a further sample of ST's lo-fi indie electronic which has been defining cool since the mid-90s. -Kenyon

Fol Chen new track + tour with Liars

West coast indie art pop ensemble Fol Chen are ready to release the follow up to last year's Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made with Part II: The New December (on Asthmatic Kitty July 6, 2010). The album features members of Liars, who are taking Fol Chen on tour with them. "In Ruins" shows the band proud and confident with their mixture of hard-to-identify sounds and female vocals that bring to mind the best of Luscious Jackson. Also, find their law-defying cover of Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh" at their myspace. -Kenyon

Norman

The country-folk-rock from this Portland, Oregon band bears striking resemblance to My Morning Jacket on these two songs from their upcoming Hay, Hay, Make A Wish and Turn Away (out May 18, 2010 on Timber Carnival records). "Hell, If I Love" has a big country rock vibration that can fill a large space, while "No Clouds" rides a horse with no name through shuffling percussion and robust harmonies. -Kenyon

Soundpool >>> new track

"But It's So" - listen here.

Post-shoegaze ambient dance with a canonball of cosmic sounds, including one you will recognize from the Ting Ting's "Great DJ." "But It's So" will be on the upcoming album Mirrors In Your Eyes, the New York groop's third full-length album, expected soon on Killer Pimp records. Track is also on a limited 7" out later this month. -Kenyon

DD/MM/YYYY - new tunes + tour dates

After a few months of being put-off by the absurd band name, this Toronto, Canada act catapulted themselves in front of me, and i was like, whoaaaa, CASSETTE. The jagged left-field experimental rock band is giving us a U.S release of its third album, Black Square, which is gonna be put to the test September 15 via digital and CASSETTE format. Radddd. After originally releasing Black Square in Canada in April, the DD/MM/YYYY was on the roads with Crystal Castles, Japanther and Dan Deacon. So obviously they are hip. I am sorry i ever doubted you, DD/MM/YYYY. -Kenyon

REVOLTING COCKS to tour North America for the first time since the late 1980s. Band will release Sex-O MiXXX-O in late September, a collection of remixes from their 2009 album Sex-O Olympic-O.

Holy crapes, the deliberately offensive RevCo has been re-charged by industrial metal icon Al Jourgensen and co. after Jourgensen ended Ministry this year. Jim Rose will host the shows, plus openers Blownload and Left Spine Down. RevCo started with Jourgensen, Luc Van Acker and Richard 23 from Front 242. The new line-up has Jourgensen joined by singer Josh Bradford, guitarist Sin Quirin, keyboardist/electronicist Clayton Worbeck, drummer Aaron Rossi (Ministry, Prong) and bassist Murv Douglas (Powerman 5000).

Wild Moccasins (Houston, Texas)

i can't say that Wild Moccasins are one of my favoritest indie pop bands of the year, but i can confidently say that they are a perfect 10 for funtime indie pop band press photos. In this one they look like they just stepped out of the J Geils Band video for "Freeze Frame," which came out before any of these kids were born. The Moccasins' album Microscopic Metronomes is out there now. -Kenyon

"Future Primitive" [mp3]
from You Can Have What You Want, out April 14, 2009. Leader Jason Quever flosses his teeth with organic spacious pop dripping with 1960s/70s soft psychedelia. The matured songwriting for "Future Primitive" is nearly up there with the new Animal Collective. -Kenyon

Starsailor >> new song >>
"Boy in Waiting" (live at Hard Rock Cafe, London) [mp3]
All The Plans releases March 9, 2009 in the UK.

The first Starsailor album was super melancholy and slow-paced before the band got some Leonard Cohen in them for the vibrant songs on the partially Phil Spector-produced Silence is Easy. "Boy in Waiting" (at least live) is less showy, as All the Plans is "closer in spirit to the first album."

Like Bells

similar: Dirty Three, Do Make Say Think, Japancakes
This instrumental trio is the latest addition to the Exit Stencil label. Instrumental aside from the Sigur Ros-like calling at the end of "Yeti." And you know what a Yeti is, right? Unlike Sigur Ros or Explosions in the Sky, these two samplings are of a shorter length. The violin acts as the subtle counterpart to the intricating guitar. Album out May 19, 2009. Very future.

Because one band isn't enough.
Perhapst >> audio

John Moen of the Decemberists and previously and currently of a ton of other bands and peoples fronts Perhapst. His self-titled debut stays close to the home of his primary band. Although Moen plays most of the instruments for Perhapst, guests include Stephen Malkmus. Did i mention Moen is also the drummer for Robert Pollard's Boston Spaceships? god dammit! you know, some of us have ZERO BANDS.
