Fol Chen new track + tour with Liars

West coast indie art pop ensemble Fol Chen are ready to release the follow up to last year's Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made with Part II: The New December (on Asthmatic Kitty July 6, 2010). The album features members of Liars, who are taking Fol Chen on tour with them. "In Ruins" shows the band proud and confident with their mixture of hard-to-identify sounds and female vocals that bring to mind the best of Luscious Jackson. Also, find their law-defying cover of Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh" at their myspace. -Kenyon

Blur >> new song!

Graham Coxon re-joined last year to play festivals and junk. And now, this new zzzz i'm sleeping tune, which could have been a B-side from Blur's Modern Life is Rubbish. "Fool's Day" doesn't even sound finished. At least it's better than Stink Tank. -Kenyon
Drummer of You Say Party! We Say Die! dead at age 30

Drummer Devon Clifford of YSPWSD, who released one of the best albums of 2010 so far, collapsed onstage Friday night at a concert in Vancouver and passed away early Sunday morning. Reported at Spinner and NME, among others.

Univox: Univox (ROIR)
release: April 13, 2010 (digital) May 11 (CD)
style: garage rock, rock 'n roll
[rating: ***1/2] "Pi," the quick, garage rocky lead off single from this Philly band's debut, is a misleading first listen. The songs that follow show a different type of band, one that is smarter and melodic. All four members sing and write (hence "Univox"), which brings a unified existence to "You Don't Know" and "Bright Lady Light," the latter of which harnesses their influence from the Kinks. In the middle of the album, Univox takes a respectable chance and exits their box for the dark "All This Blood Came from My Heart," which is like an a cappella Gregorian chant with modern lovelorn lyrics. -Kenyon

into>>the>>future
Norman

The country-folk-rock from this Portland, Oregon band bears striking resemblance to My Morning Jacket on these two songs from their upcoming Hay, Hay, Make A Wish and Turn Away (out May 18, 2010 on Timber Carnival records). "Hell, If I Love" has a big country rock vibration that can fill a large space, while "No Clouds" rides a horse with no name through shuffling percussion and robust harmonies. -Kenyon

movie left for dead.

The Boogens
(1981) Mostly mundane in its first hour, the Boogens (which is rare on VHS and never put to DVD) suffers from several pot holes. Oh my bad, i mean PLOT holes. The "monsters" keep a low profile during that hour, only showing their tentacle grabbing people. When the mutants are finally shown full body (i think), it's still a mystery as to the what, why, where and how. The "how" being this: how could they have survived in a mine tunnel cave for 80 years. And how about this for a why: Why do they kill one guy in the garage and then bring him down to the cave where he is found floating in the water, while they kill some girl and leave her in the basement. Just left there. Didn't even bother to eat her. The two lead girls look straight out of most any other early campy 80s horror film, and in fact one of them was in the original Prom Night. At least the Boogens didn't get REMADE yet! [rating: *1/2] -Kenyon
movie left for dead.

The Cavern
(2005) Ruined by unlikeable characters and a ludicrous ending, the Cavern sets a new low for horror set in the underground. A group of adventurers, whose passion for cave exploration is hardly believable, find a cave that has never been explored. It happens to be a year after their friend DIED in a cave during one of their outings. But that doesn't stop them from going into a big hole in the middle of nowhere! A creature--which we don't see much of till the end--has apparently been dwelling in the cave, surviving for years without eating people, until now (just like the Boogens!). When its identity is revealed, the Cavern only digs itself into a deeper hole (ha!). Let's just say that there's no way the creature would have the strength to push large boulders like it does. [rating: *] -Kenyon

"Never Follow Suit" - [mp3]

Following acclaim and contributions to Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, the Swedish groop applies a dub reggae foundation for "Never Follow Suit," while the soft vocals and rich tapestry of sound is reminiscent of the Marr/Sumner project Electronic. Next album, Clinging to a Scheme, is out April 20 on Labrador/Caroline. -Kenyon
